Customer experience

BRADLEY BATES · EDUCATOR + SYSTEMS BUILDER
I bring nearly two decades of customer experience, frontline leadership, and quality work to the technical practice of building—and questioning—AI systems.
WHY I TEACH THIS

My background runs through customer support, dispatch, frontline supervision, quality review, and team leadership—including leadership in online support and chat at GoDaddy and serving as a boiler operator supervisor in the U.S. Navy. That work taught me how people actually encounter complex systems: under pressure, with incomplete information, trying to solve something that matters.
It also taught me that expertise is not the ability to sound impressive. It is the ability to make complexity usable without lying about it.
My serious journey into AI began in 2025 through creative experiments, coding, and long conversations with the technology itself. I was fascinated by what it could do—and I also learned firsthand how easy it is to give a fluent system more authority than it has earned.
A language model can sound intimate, insightful, and cosmically certain while primarily reflecting the framing it has been given. Sustained interaction can reward confidence, reinforce a story, and make fluency feel like evidence. Learning how the machinery actually works gave me the lens to recognize those failure modes.
I do not teach AI from a safe distance. I learned through building, questioning, getting things wrong, and figuring out what the machine was actually doing.
Today my work spans AI strategy, operations architecture, governance, and product development. I design governed runtimes, persistent state, orchestration, evaluation, auditability, and human-in-the-loop controls using tools including Python, TypeScript, React, FastAPI, Postgres, Redis, and Rust.
That combination matters. I can explain the human experience of AI, trace the technical system underneath it, and identify the governance choices that determine whether it remains useful, trustworthy, and under human control.
I currently volunteer as AI Strategy & Operations Architect with the Canine Stroke Foundation. I help the team develop lightweight AI governance, repeatable workflows, internal tools, and plain-language guidance so staff and volunteers can use AI safely and consistently. The goal is capability transfer: helping people become more capable with the tools, not more dependent on me.
The Foundation was created by Jordan Davis, drawing on more than a decade of hands-on veterinary experience and her life with Finley after his strokes. She recognized how much clinical knowledge fails to reach families in a form they can actually use, then began building an organization to close that gap for dogs, cats, and the people caring for them. The mission, the urgency, and the heart of the work are hers. I am grateful to help build some of the systems behind it.

I also contribute on an unpaid basis as Governance Architect for Chelys Security, an early-stage project developing autonomous penetration-testing technology. My role is to help build the security, risk, and compliance structure around the product: clear authorization and rules of engagement, responsible-AI controls, data-handling standards, policy, customer trust, and a practical path toward SOC 2 and ISO 27001 readiness.
Offensive-security tools need firm boundaries. The work is largely about making scope, authority, evidence, review, and escalation explicit before an autonomous system acts—not after something goes wrong. I work with the founder and team to make those controls part of the product and operating model from the beginning.
THE PRACTICE BEHIND THE PROGRAM
Years of listening, translating, de-escalating, coaching, and finding the real problem underneath the first question.
Hands-on work across modern AI models, software, orchestration, memory, evaluation, and agent architecture.
A focus on authority, boundaries, auditability, and the controls that keep human beings responsible for consequential decisions.
“I don’t want people to be less afraid of AI. I want them to be harder to fool—and more capable of using it well.”
